IP Ratings Explained: What IP67 Really Means for Off-Road Lights
December 12, 20254 min read
The IP code (Ingress Protection) uses two digits: the first rates protection against solid objects and dust, the second against moisture.
A rating of IP67 means the housing is fully protected against dust ingress (digit 6) and can be immersed in water up to 1 metre for 30 minutes (digit 7). That level of sealing is appropriate for lights mounted on mud-splashed, pressure-washed machines.
For purely dry cabin mountings, a lower rating can be acceptable, but most exterior work lights ship with robust gaskets and potted internals that exceed basic ratings.
Always confirm the IP rating is backed by a real test. FLYKAY seals lenses with epoxy-potting and rated gaskets on every exterior series.
